The so-called Israel-Palestine ‘conflict’ is often seen as a religious conflict between Muslim and Jews. In this episode Sara unpacks why it is both wrong and unhelpful to view and frame the conflict as religious. Casting the situation in this way makes it seem hateful and a conflict between people of equal means. People might think there’s nothing they can do because that’s how it’s always been but that is false. From the Palestinian perspective it’s a struggle for survival of the colonised against the coloniser, and from the Israeli perspective it’s a fight to conquer the land and remove the Indigenous Palestinians. Why does Zionism use religious justification as part of its rhetoric arsenal? In part, since the Nakba, the Zionist project has been using religious motivation to encourage Jews across the world to take part in colonial projects as settlers. For example, they considered Uganda and Argentina to colonise but it was an easier task to encourage Jewish settlement in the Holy Land. There’s also the fact that one of Zionism’s most powerful allies are actually evangelical Christians who believe that supporting Israel will lead to the Biblical prophecy coming true which states that all Jews must be gathered in the Holy Land in order to trigger the rapture and second coming of Christ. Historic Palestine has been a multi-ethinic and multi-religious place for centuries. So, we can’t reduce the Palestinian struggle to an Islamic struggle because Palestinians aren’t only Muslims. They’re being targeted because they’re an Indigenous population regardless of their faith.
