@shado.mag In response to events of the last couple of weeks in Gaza many have been rushing to denounce all violence against “innocent civilians” whether Israeli or Palestinian. But what does this language do and why is it biased? It paints a picture of a war between two sides but it’s more complicated than that. Israel is a settler colonial state. In settler colonialism, the settler makes a home by dominating, displacing and destroying tbe Indigenous. The role of the settler is necessarily violent: there are no innocent settlers. A settler is not the same as a migrant. Migrants don’t violently displace the people who live there already. The problem with the Jewish settlement is the intention of creating an exclusively Jewish state and the mass violence that goes along with it. It’s easy to blame only the Israeli military and government but individual settlers have a role to play as well. At their most extreme, settlers are armed by the government to go with impunity into Palestinian homes and kick people out. There are however Israelis who are fighting colonialism too e.g. refusing mandatory military service.
