Sara highlights two historic moments to know about when “peace” was supposedly on the table: 1) Back in 1947 when the UN drew up a ‘partition plan’ to separate the land of historic Palestine into two sovereign nations of Palestine and israel. Note Ghassan Kanafani’s timeless quote: “They steal your bread, then give you a crumb of it… Then they demand you to thank them for their generosity.” The plan gave over 50% of Palestinian land to the Zionist project, deliberately cutting historic Palestine up in a way to fragment the Palestinian population and to hoard land and sea space for the Zionist project. In rejecting the partition plan, Palestinians were rejecting settler colonialism and oppression. 2) In the 1990s, there was the so-called ‘peace process’ which culminated in the Oslo Accords. This was a negotiation between the Palestinian Liberation Organisation and the Israeli government, mediated by none other than… the US. One of the outcomes of the Accord was that the PLO recognised the state of Israel, and the state of Israel recognised the PLO as the representation of the Palestinian people – but there would be no recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state. Moreover, the core demands of the right of return, end to military occupation and Palestinian equal rights and self-determination were never addressed in Oslo.
