Ep 2: Clothing Landfills

@shado.mag

The clothes we donate to charity are actually just ending up in landfills in the Global South. How do we ethically dispose of our clothes? In Episode 2 of our new series What Can You Do? @Jemima Elliott takes us through 5 practical ways we can extend the life of our clothes, keep them out of landfill and reduce the likelihood they will end up in landfill in the Global South. 1. Ask if friends or family would like the garment 2. Learn to repair and upcycle. BE CREATIVE! 3. Think about other uses, from cleaning cloths to patches for other broken clothes 4. Donate to small local organisations and initiatives instead of large chain charity shops. These could be local homeless shelters or women’s refuges, local organisations that support refugees and asylum seekers, or projects like The Wardrobe in Gateshead, who provide queer safe spaces for clothes redistribution. 5. If you do donate your clothes to charity, make sure they are clean, in good condition and suitable to be worn again. Respect the next person to wear the item. There are so many ways we can extend the lives of our clothes. What are your tips and tricks? Have you done some creative upcycling recently?
